There is an additional aspect to the laboratories that should be mentioned. To wean students from a cookbook mentality, as the semester progresses the procedures become more and more concise. So for example, there may be a detailed description of how to perform a vacuum filtration in an early exercise, in a later exercise it would only say to vacuum filter the material. This puts the onus on the student to understand and remember things learned earlier in the semester.
